US President-elect Donald Trump has named on Wednesday Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida for the next Attorney General, who has the task of ending the partisan weaponising of the Justice Department. "Matt is a very talented and relentless lawyer, trained at the William & Mary College of Law who has distinguished himself in the House of Representatives by being focused on achieving desperately needed reform at the Department of Justice," Trump said in a statement.
"Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan Weaponization of our Justice System. Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organisations, and restore Americans' badly shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department."
Gaetz reacted on X: "An honor to serve as President Trump's Attorney General!"
The President-elect also mentioned that as a member of the House Judiciary Committee, which oversees the Department of Justice, Gaetz played a crucial role in "defeating the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax", that is, to an investigation into alleged Russian interference with the 2016 election to allow Trump defeat Hillary Clinton.
If confirmed, Mr. Gaetz, 42, would be the 87th Attorney General of the country. He would oversee a department that employs more than 100,000 people and is responsible for investigating and prosecuting violations of federal laws, overseeing the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A member of the House of Representatives since 2017.
He will be questioned by the bipartisan ethics committee of the House of Representatives in an ongoing process of investigation.
As stated earlier in the year by an investigation if he "engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, accepted improper gifts, dispensed special privileges and favours to individuals with whom he had a personal relationship, and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct".
The tenure of Gaetz as Congressman has also been full of controversy from voting with Democrats to drag Republicans along on legislation and throwing the gauntlet down to bring the Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy, along with a small number of Republican lawmakers, down and plunged his party in the House into crisis for days as it struggled to find a successor.
