US President Donald Trump has terminated former vice president and 2024 Democratic challenger Kamala Harris's Secret Service protection, Reuters reported Friday, quoting a senior White House official.
The official explained that Harris's security had been extended by then-President Joe Biden for another year, until January 2026, before Biden departed office last January.
Reuters noted that, under normal procedure, former vice presidents have six months of Secret Service protection following their departure from office.
A letter written to Harris, seen by CNN, informed her that her extended security arrangements would be terminated beginning September 1.
You are instructed to suspend any security-related procedures previously approved by Executive Memorandum, except those necessitated by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris," the letter stated in its entirety, CNN reported.
Senior adviser to Harris, Kirsten Allen, said that the former vice president told her she was thankful to the Secret Service.
"The United States Secret Service is thanked by the vice president for their professionalism, dedication, and unflinching commitment to safety," she said in a statement to Reuters.
This comes as Harris is getting ready for her highly anticipated multi-city book tour for her forthcoming memoir, 107 Days, which chronicles her short-lived presidential campaign and is set to come out on September 23.
Harris competed last year in Biden's place after he had dropped out of the presidential campaign but was beaten by Trump.
