U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday has attacked Democratic Senator Chris Murphy after the latter condemned the Alaska summit, labeling him as "very unattractive" and a "lightweight" who makes it difficult to negotiate peace.
Murphy had assailed the session as humiliating to America, calling it a "disaster" and "an embarrassment for the US." Murphy had also claimed the talks enabled Russian President Vladimir Putin to get "everything he wanted."
Replying on his social media account Truth Social, Trump wrote: "The very unattractive (both inside and out!) Senator from Connecticut, Chris Murphy, said 'Putin got everything that he wanted.' Actually, 'nobody got anything,' too soon, but getting close."
He went on to say: "Murkey is a lightweight who believes it made the Russian President look good for visiting America. In fact, it was extremely difficult for President Putin to do so. This war can be brought to an end, NOW, but idiots like Chris Murphy, John Bolton, and others, make it many times more difficult to do so."
Addressing NBC News, Murphy had stated: "That meeting was a disaster, it was an embarrassment for the United States. It was a failure. Putin got everything he wanted. I mean, first of all, he wanted that photo-op. He wanted to be cleansed of his war crimes before the entire world. He was invited to the United States. War criminals are not generally invited to the United States of America."
The Alaska discussions were held at the Arctic Warrior Convention Centre on early Saturday (Indian time) and involved Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Trump and Putin stated that three hours of talks provided them with momentum toward the end of the Ukraine conflict, but no immediate ceasefire was announced. Trump later explained to Fox News: "It's not a done deal at all. And Ukraine has to agree. President (Volodymyr) Zelensky has to agree.
He also said: "We had an excellent meeting today, and I believe a lot of points were negotiated on behalf of Ukraine."
After the summit, Trump spoke on a phone call with European leaders and President Zelensky on Saturday to update them on the Alaska talks.
Trump has consistently hinted that Zelensky might end the war immediately, under specific terms, such as forsaking Ukraine's claim on Crimea and promising not to join NATO. On Sunday, he repeated on Truth Social: "President Zelensky of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight.". No reclaiming Obama for giving away Crimea (12 years ago, without the firing of a single shot!).and no joining NATO by Ukraine. Some things are ever the same!")
European political leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Portuguese President Antonio Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are likely to stand with Zelensky when he meets Trump. European leaders are worried that the White House negotiations will be used by Trump as a platform to push Zelensky to sign Putin's terms at the Alaska summit.
