Former President Donald Trump vowed Tuesday on his campaign trip to Howell, Michigan, to "Make America Safe Again." His campaign stop was meant to counter the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, during which Democrats mockingly derided the former president as a "career criminal."
Trump, addressing sheriff's deputies and supporters, labeled Democratic nominee for vice president Kamala Harris "the ringleader" behind a "Marxist attack on law enforcement." He warned against her bringing more crime, chaos, and destruction that would occur through her guarantees to restore law, order, safety, and peace. Trump also showed the police service his support, including against a tendency to have a death penalty for a child rapist and trafficker, whose mention did not come out during his speech.
Trump within his speech went on with sharp jabs at President Joe Biden and his administration for, he said, sweeping issues like inflation and the U.S.-Mexico border under the rug. He painted a grim picture of what life in America would be like under a potential Harris presidency, speaking in hyperbole about crime and safety.
Meanwhile, the Democratic National Convention was really focused on attacks on Trump. There were references to his convictions for criminality and the ongoing legal problems he still faces among the speakers. Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas savaged Trump as "a career criminal with numerous felonies and impeachments," contrasting him with Harris's career as an attorney. There were chants of "Lock him up! Lock him up!" in the convention hall as Trump faced the reversal of sentiments that Hillary Clinton had to all those years ago in 2016.
