A recent report released by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) established that from August 2024 to June 2025, the nation experienced a minimum of 121 deaths and more than 5,100 casualties resulting from 471 individual incidents of political violence throughout the period of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
The results were revealed on Monday in a press conference at TIB's Dhaka office in Dhanmondi. Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman unveiled the report, while senior research fellows Shahzada Akram and Zulkarnain presented the main data.
The report blames the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for a crushing 92 percent of the violent episodes. Islamist movement Jamaat-e-Islami accounted for 5 percent of the cases, and the National Citizen Party (NCP) for 1 percent.
"We have found the lack of respect for law among many of the political parties," stated Zulkarnain, quoted by The Daily Star, one of the most influential newspapers in Bangladesh.
Dr. Iftekharuzzaman noted that while the interim government has launched a number of reforms, these initiatives do not have a solid implementation plan. "This has resulted in an increasing trust deficit between citizens and other stakeholders," he mentioned.
He also alleged that people aligned with recently established political parties, as well as members of the interim government, have been involved in corruption and issues of conflict of interest.
TIB also expressed worries that even though there is some agreement on reform actions delineated in the July Charter, their implementation is still uncertain because of legal and constitutional uncertainties.
The report noted that deep-seated disagreements among key political players are still precluding progress on key reforms under the Charter framework.
Furthermore, the study highlighted continuing curbs on freedom of expression and access to information in Bangladesh.
The trend of growing dominance of religion-based politics in the last year was a concerning trend pointed out in the report. This trend, TIB stated, has been followed by violence and discrimination against women and religious minorities—shattering the values of inclusivity and equality.
The caretaker government has been criticized for a surge in politically charged violence, such as attacks against police officers, journalists, minorities, and those linked to the ruling Awami League party.
The report included accounts of extrajudicial executions, false arrest of journalists on trumped-up charges, mob assaults, and increasing religious intolerance—like attacks against Hindu communities and desecration of temples.
