White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said that President Donald Trump deserves to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, attributing to him the settlement of several global conflicts, including persistent animosity between India and Pakistan.
As reported by Leavitt, since then-President Trump tweeted on May 10 that India and Pakistan had agreed to a "full and immediate" ceasefire after prolonged overnight talks brokered by the U.S., he has claimed multiple times that he was involved in the peace negotiations between the two countries.
Addressing a White House press conference on Thursday, Leavitt stated that Trump has effectively ended wars in different regions, including "Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo and Egypt and Ethiopia."
She emphasized the frequency of these diplomatic initiatives, pointing out that the president has negotiated well over one peace agreement or truce a month since he entered the White House six months ago.
"It's long overdue that President Trump was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize," she contended.
Trump has made nearly thirty public assertions that he "helped settle" the between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan, going on to say that he promised both countries that the United States would do "a lot of trade" with them if they stopped fighting.
But in Parliament this week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi clearly asserted no foreign leader asked India to suspend Operation Sindoor.
Reiterating that view, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made it clear on Wednesday that there was no third-party mediation in reaching the ceasefire with Pakistan during the operation. He rejected Trump's claim that the de-escalation had been trade-related.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha in the context of a special session on Operation Sindoor, Jaishankar pointed out that there were no direct communications between Modi and Trump between April 22—the day of the Pahalgam terror attack—and June 16.
