India's Afghanistan point person Anand Prakash met with the Taliban's interim Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, with talks focusing on political and commercial matters, Afghan media reported on Sunday.
During the talks in Kabul, the interim foreign minister underscored the need for expanding political and economic ties with India, Tolo News reported.
Muttaqi highlighted the potential of enhancing diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries and invited Indian investors to tap into investment opportunities in Afghanistan, the report attributed to an Afghan spokesman.
Prakash, the joint secretary in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran division of the Ministry of External Affairs, traveled during heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly after the Pahalgam terror attack.
It is unclear if the recent attack was raised at the Prakash-Muttaqi meeting.
India has not yet officially embraced the Taliban government of Afghanistan, and continues to insist on the formation of a genuinely inclusive government in Kabul. Apart from that, India is insisting that Afghan territory should not be used as a launching pad for terrorist activities against any nation. India has also been demanding unconditional humanitarian aid to Afghanistan to relieve the country from its present predicament.
India restored its diplomatic presence in Kabul in June 2022 by deploying a "technical team" to the Indian Embassy in the capital of Afghanistan, following its earlier withdrawal of its officials after the Taliban's capture of power in August 2021 on grounds of security.
