The Nassau County Police have refuted reports of a bomb discovery at or near a venue where former US President Donald Trump held a rally on Wednesday.
In a Facebook post, police stated: "Reports that an explosive device was found at the Nassau Coliseum are FALSE."
An unnamed police official told media that they responded to the reports of the bomb but their investigations did not find anything and are also not sure how the rumor originated.
Trump is scheduled to speak Wednesday evening at the Nassau Coliseum — where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to address a diaspora rally on Sunday. The venue is about 45km from New York City at Uniondale on Long Island.
It's making arrangements for tighter security than initially planned because of the assassination attempt on Trump last Sunday.
Rumors involving the explosive had circulated around social media without proper attribution that created a scare.
Earlier, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said: "We will make sure that it is safe and it will be swept, we will have aviation over top during arrival and during the time of the event and we will also have our K-9 dogs out in the wooded areas" around the arena.
State Officials continue to prepare for one of the biggest weekend sports events. "Every inch" of the Coliseum and its perimeter will be swept, he said.
The area has been put under lockdown, and people not connected with the rally or coming to join are being evacuated. Over 60,000 requested tickets but only 16,000 with tickets could be accommodated in the arena, and others coming will have to watch on giant screens.
Heavy security surrounded Trump as he spent the night in his penthouse of the Trump Towers in Manhattan. The locality was heavily policed, and entry of foot traffic was regulated. Approaches to it were blocked by sanitation trucks filled with sand.
