Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has come in defense of US President Donald Trump's attempts at resolving the current Russia-Ukraine conflict, reiterating that India's position is not one of neutrality but one committed to fostering peace.
In a joint press conference with Trump on Thursday, Modi repeated his conviction that diplomacy, and not war, is the answer to an enduring solution. He spoke about repeating his famous quote, "this is not an era of war," which he had made during an interaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Responding to false assumptions regarding India's stance, PM Modi explained that the nation has been in close touch with Russia as well as Ukraine, and is committed to backing a peaceful solution.
"Some assume India is neutral in this regard, but I want to make it clear: India is not neutral. We are on the side of peace," PM Modi asserted.
He added further, "War cannot fix anything. Ultimately, only through dialogue is there a way forward." He also thanked President Trump for his attempts and wished that Trump would be able to usher in peace in the near future.
The Russia-Ukraine war was one of the key issues discussed during the bilateral meeting between Modi and Trump in the morning. Modi appreciated Trump's active outreach to both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling it a positive move towards peace.
"President Trump has done a great job by calling both President Putin and President Zelenskyy. I have been speaking for dialogue and diplomacy since the start. We have always been for peace and negotiations," Modi concluded.
