Pioneering Moment: Historic Bid as First Hindu Woman Contests Elections in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Dr. Saveera Parkash, a Pakistani-Hindu, is poised to make history as the first woman from the minority community to run in the upcoming general elections in the Buner district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Submitting her nomination papers for the general seat of PK-25 on December 23, Dr. Parkash is currently serving as the General Secretary of the Women Wing for the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) in the district. She is optimistic about contesting the elections on the party's ticket.

The general elections in Pakistan are scheduled for February 8 next year, where members of the 16th National Assembly will be elected.

Having completed her MBBS in 2022 from Abbottabad International Medical College, Dr. Parkash, expressing a deep commitment to humanitarian service due to her medical background, shared, "Serving humanity is in my blood." Her aspiration to become an elected legislator stems from witnessing shortcomings in government hospitals and a desire to address these issues.

Dr. Parkash aims to follow in the footsteps of her father, Oam Parkash, a recently retired doctor and active member of the PPP for the past 35 years. Social media influencer Imran Noshad Khan endorsed Dr. Parkash's candidacy on X, stating, "Dr. Saveera Parkash is the first female candidate from Buner, marking a historic moment as women have not previously been involved in electoral politics in the region." He expressed wholehearted support for her in breaking stereotypes.

The Election Commission of Pakistan mandates a minimum representation of 5 per cent for women candidates on general seats, underlining the significance of diverse participation in the electoral process.
