Pahalgam Attack Response Reflects Global Unity Against Terrorism: India at UN

Calling the attack one of the deadliest attacks in recent history, India's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Yojna Patel said, "The Pahalgam terrorist attack is the highest civilian casualty since the heinous 26/11 Mumbai attacks in 2008."

India has strongly argued that the huge and clear-cut support that world leaders expressed in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack is testimony to the global community's uncompromising stand against terrorism.

She also pointed out India's history dating back decades in combating terror, stating, "Having been victimized by decades of cross-border terrorism, India has the total appreciation of the long-term impact such violence leaves on the victims, families and society as a whole."

This was stated by the Ambassador at the UN headquarters on Monday at the hybrid launch ceremony for the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism's 'Victims of Terrorism Association Network' (VoTAN).

Patel reasserted India's gratitude to the international community, saying, "India is deeply grateful and appreciative of the strong, unflinching support and solidarity conveyed by leaders and governments across the world in the wake of the recent terrorist attack at Pahalgam in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. This is a demonstration of the world community's zero tolerance for terrorism."

The April 22 fatal attack in Pahalgam murdered 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali, all of whom were mostly tourists traveling from different parts of India.

The tragedy attracted universal condemnation from global leaders, such as U.S. President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, Russian President Vladimir Putin, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. They all extended their condolences and reaffirmed their solidarity with India against this heinous act.

Following the attack, the UN Security Council issued a firm and unambiguous condemnation of the violence in a press statement. The 15-nation council declared that the perpetrators and patrons of the attack should be identified and put on trial and labeled it a "reprehensible act of terrorism."

The Security Council emphasized, "Those responsible for these murders should be held to account," and urged all countries to cooperate completely with relevant authorities in line with international law and UN resolutions.

This strong statement was issued on behalf of all members of the Security Council by Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont, France's Permanent Representative to the UN, who is serving as Council President for April.
