Officials said people are still buried under the rubble, BBC reported. Early unconfirmed reports said a bomber had blown himself up in the mosque. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that "terrorists want to create fear by targeting those who perform the duty of defending Pakistan".

TTP claims responsibility for Peshawar mosque attack, toll rises to 32

According to security officials, the suicide attacker was present in the front row during the prayers when he exploded himself, injuring dozens of faithfuls offering Zuhr prayers, Geo News reported. The outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has taken responsibility for the attack, the report said.

The blast occurred as Zuhr prayers were being offered and caused a portion of the building to collapse. The explosion took place at around 1:40pm local time. Some of the injured are in critical condition. The cause of the explosion is unclear and no group has claimed responsibility.  The police have closed roads leading to the Red Zone.
