US airstrikes hit Taliban in Helmand, 40 killed
Though the Afghan government did not confirm civilian people being hit, sources in the provincial capital said that eight members of a family, including children, were killed in the strikes. The sources added that the fighters had attacked the central prison in Lashkargah city which was driven back by the strikes. The US army has recently intensified its airstrikes on the Taliban to support the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces.
Afghanistan President Ghani's time has run out: Taliban
Reacting to Ghani's remark that the ongoing war is an external intrigue imposed on the people of Afghanistan, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid accused Ghani of lying and spreading false information. A tweet by Mujahid said that his (Ghani's) time is over and the announcement of warfare will not survive him.
Death toll from floods in China's Henan reach 302
Another 50 people remain missing, Xinhua news agency quoted the office as saying. A total of 292 people were confirmed dead and 47 missing in Zhengzhou, the provincial capital. There were seven fatalities and three missing in Xinxiang city, while Pingdingshan and Luohe reported two and one death, respectively.
US Senate introduces bipartisan infrastructure bill
The US Senate has introduced a long-awaited and hotly debated infrastructure bill. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Sunday said that given the bipartisan nature of the bill, he believed that the chamber could quickly process amendments and pass the bill. The bipartisan bill includes $550 billion in new spending on infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, passenger rails, drinking water and waste water systems.
Afghan watchdog reports 80% spike in civilian casualties
In its latest report released on Sunday, the watchdog added that 1,594 security incidents occurred during this period. In the first six months of 2020, according to the watchdog, 1,213 civilians were killed and 1,744 injured, reports TOLO News. The Commission report noted that during this period 154 women were killed and 350 were wounded. These numbers in 2020 were 126 killed and 171 wounded.
'Ending Israeli settlement important step for trust-building'
Ahmed Majdalani, a member of the executive committee of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), told reporters here on Sunday that "the Israeli settlement building and the confiscation of Palestinian land must stop", reports Xinhua news agency. He added that trust-building doesn't only mean easing economic and financial measures for the Palestinians or arranging security coordination between the two sides, but also means changing the Israeli policies.
Pyongyang urges cancellation US-S.Korea military drills
The joint military drills are "an undesirable prelude which seriously undermines the will of the top leaders of the North and the South wishing to see a step taken toward restoring mutual trust and which beclouds the way ahead of the north-south relations", Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted Kim Yo-jong, the sister of leader Kim Jong-un.
Afghan VP continues unabated Pakistan slamming
In a latest tweet, Saleh blamed Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi for "once again speaking on behalf of Taliban". "Once again speaking on behalf of Taliban terrorists, the strategic proxy of his country in Afghanistan & the region, Foreign Minister Qureshi is louder. But can he explain where does he gets his confidence? When was the latest meeting of GHQ with Quetta Shura & HQN?" Saleh queried in a tweet on Sunday.
California wildfire burns over 244,000 acres
The Dixie Fire in Northern California, which started about 10 miles northeast of Paradise, is California's largest blaze so far this year and now covers 244,888 acres in Butte and Plumas counties. The fire erupted on July 14, has burnt acres of land. The fire was contained to 32 per cent as reported on Sunday. Till now 67 structures have been destroyed and nine structures have been damaged due to the blaze.
Wildfire in Greece injures 16 people
The fire, which broke out near Patras located west of the capital Athens on July 31, spread rapidly due to strong winds and reached coastal areas within a few hours, reports Xinhua news agency. The injured were transferred to hospitals due to respiratory problems, while people in nearby villages were told to evacuate, the authorities said. Fifty-six wildfires had broken out in Greece since July 30.
