Only hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire in place, missile warning sirens blared throughout Israel, with officials asking citizens to take immediate cover as a new wave of attacks from Iran hit them.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) verified the existence of incoming missiles and reported that air defense systems were engaged to shoot down the missiles.
Emergency services subsequently reported that a ballistic missile landed on a building in the southern city of Beersheba. While no one was hurt immediately, Magen David Adom reported emergency teams had been sent in to determine the extent on the ground.
The missile attacks came shortly after Iran officially announced that it was suspending military operations against Israel from 4 a.m. local time. Tehran, however, made it clear that this suspension was reversible and depended on the cessation of Israel's own attacks.
This position contrasted with President Trump's previous announcement on Truth Social, in which he had asserted that a ceasefire had been successfully negotiated between the two countries.
Trump's statement came after Iran launched missile strikes against U.S. military bases in Qatar. He tweeted that Israel and Iran had consented to cease fighting.
Tehran, however, was swift in denying that claim. Iranian authorities maintained that they had not been issued any official ceasefire message from Washington. The nation's Foreign Minister again expressed that the conflict was started by Israel and explained that Iran had suspended its operations at 4 a.m. temporarily, awaiting a reciprocal de-escalation by Israel.
Israel has yet to publicly react to Trump's statement on the ceasefire as of today.
This continued conflict, now in its 12th day, was triggered by Israel's initiation of "Operation Rising Lion" aimed at vital Iranian military and nuclear sites. Since then, the two have been engaged in continuous missile fire.
Casualty reports show Iran losing an estimated 400 lives, while those killed in Israel are about 24.
Tensions ran further high when the United States became more directly involved, launching targeted attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan—actions that caused widespread alert throughout the Middle East.
