The tragic deaths of an affluent Indian-origin family in Massachusetts have been determined to be a murder-suicide following a comprehensive autopsy conducted by medical authorities.

Rakesh Kamal, 57, his wife Teena Kamal, 54, and their daughter Arianna Kamal, 18, were discovered deceased in their $5 million estate in Dover, Massachusetts, on December 28, 2023. Rakesh was found near a firearm, and the autopsy confirmed that Teena and Arianna were victims of homicide by gunshot. Rakesh's cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as per the medical examiner's report, with a final autopsy report anticipated in the coming weeks.

The firearm recovered, identified as a .40 caliber Glock 22, was not registered under Rakesh's name, and he lacked the necessary license for its possession. Authorities are conducting forensic and ballistics tests on the weapon and have engaged the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to ascertain its origin.

Initial investigations by the Dover and Massachusetts State Police suggest domestic violence as the cause, with no indications of outside involvement. The police responded to a distress call from a family member who had visited the residence and discovered the tragic scene.

While the affluent neighborhood in Dover is regarded as safe, the Kamal family faced financial struggles, with their mansion previously going into foreclosure and being sold for a lower value.

Both Teena and Rakesh were involved in an education systems company called EduNova, which faced financial challenges and was dissolved in 2021. Teena, a Harvard University alum, had a prominent role as the COO, while Rakesh, an MIT Sloan School of Management graduate, held executive positions before co-founding EduNova.

The family's daughter, Arianna, was a neuroscience student at Middlebury College, and Teena had an extensive background in education and technology industries.

This tragic incident, involving an affluent and educated family, has shaken the community and stands as a rare occurrence in Dover, according to Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey, highlighting the unforeseen challenges that can impact any community, irrespective of its stability.
