Jaishankar Clarifies No Discussions on Resuming Trade with Pakistan

"After last year, there have been no talks with Pakistan on trade, nor has any initiative come from their side," Jaishankar said in response to a question at a news conference here.

There have been no talks with Pakistan on resumption of trade with India, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Wednesday.

"After last year, there have been no talks with Pakistan on trade, nor has any initiative come from their side," Jaishankar said in response to a question at a news conference here.

India, he added, never even stopped trade with Pakistan, and a decision in that regard was made by the Pakistani government in 2019 itself.

"Since the very inception, our preference was that India should get most favoured nation. We were acceding MFN status to them. But it was not granted here," said Jaishankar.

The then government of Pakistan led by Imran Khan had suspended all bilateral trade in August 2019 as a retribution to the Indian move to abrogate Article 370 of its Constitution that gave special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Islamabad had also downgraded diplomatic ties with New Delhi.
