Israeli Supreme Court Delays Legislation Aimed at Preventing Netanyahu's Removal from Office

By a narrow margin of 6-5, the Supreme Court judges have opted to postpone the implementation of the "Incapacitation Law" until after the upcoming elections.

Israel's Supreme Court has made a significant decision regarding the activation of a contentious law designed to prevent the declaration of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as unfit for office.

By a narrow margin of 6-5, the Supreme Court judges have opted to postpone the implementation of the "Incapacitation Law" until after the upcoming elections. This decision effectively blocks Netanyahu, the country's longest-serving leader, from utilizing this law to his advantage. Although the next elections are anticipated in roughly two years, they could potentially occur earlier, as per the Xinhua news agency.

The law, enacted by Israel's predominantly Netanyahu-aligned parliament (Knesset) in March 2023, is part of a controversial strategy to revamp the nation's justice system. Its primary objective is to shield Netanyahu from potential disqualification by the attorney general due to conflicts of interest, a move heavily criticized by many.

Concurrently, Netanyahu faces a criminal trial involving three distinct corruption cases, underscoring his efforts to restructure the legal framework while entangled in these legal challenges.
