The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Sunday that they have conducted airstrikes in Gaza, resulting in the killing of several Hamas militants and the destruction of multiple tunnel networks belonging to the group. This comes as hostilities persist in the region following the collapse of a seven-day truce.
The IDF and Israel Security Agency (ISA) jointly confirmed the death of Wessam Farhat, the commander of Hamas’ Shejaiya Battalion, in the airstrikes. Farhat was implicated in plotting the October 7 attack on the kibbutz of Nahal Oz and an IDF post in the community, which led to the death of six IDF soldiers. Israeli officials stated that Farhat had a history of involvement in previous terror attacks dating back to 2002.
In response to the ongoing situation, the IDF has advised residents in southern Gaza to seek shelter near the Rafah border crossing, with reports of heavy shelling in Khan Younis. Khan Younis is the hometown of senior Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, believed to be a key figure behind the October 7 attack, and it is also suggested to be the hiding place of Hamas's top military leader, Mohammed Deif, within the tunnel network in the area.
