Iran has officially petitioned the United Nations, calling on the Security Council to declare Israel and the United States aggressors and demand that they pay compensation for the 12-day conflict that recently broke out between Tehran and Tel Aviv.
In a letter presented on Sunday to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi demanded both countries be declared aggressors and forced to make compensation for the losses suffered during the hostilities.
"We formally request hereby that the Security Council declare the regime of Israel and the United States as the perpetrators of the act of aggression and hold them responsible as such, including paying compensation and reparations," the letter said.
It came to a head on June 13, when an unexpected Israeli air raid killed a number of top Iranian military and nuclear figures. The assault sparked worldwide market chaos and raised further fears of a wider conflict in the region. The United States quickly joined in, hitting Iran's main nuclear sites at Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. Though former President Donald Trump announced the sites had been "obliterated," later intelligence estimates reportedly were more reserved.
On June 24, a ceasefire deal was negotiated with Qatar and the United States acting as mediators. Both sides, however, have accused the other of breaking the terms of the agreement despite the peace deal.
Israeli attacks, according to Iranian officials, have killed 627 individuals to date, while Israeli officials say 28 have died and over 1,300 have been injured as a result of Iranian missile strikes.
Tehran, however, indicated doubt on Sunday regarding the sustainability of the tenuous peace.
"We have serious reservations about the enemy's adherence to its commitments, including the ceasefire. We are ready to give a strong response if aggression is repeated," Iran's chief of staff of the armed forces, Abdolrahim Mousavi, said to the Fars News Agency.
"We did not initiate the war, but we have retaliated against the aggressor with all our might," he continued.
