Indian-Origin Liberal Dave Sharma Chosen for Australia's Senate Seat

Former MP Dave Sharma's return to the Australian parliament marks a significant milestone as the first person of Indian-origin from the opposition Liberal party to secure the New South Wales (NSW) Senate position.

In a vote among Liberal Party members on Sunday, Dave secured victory, triumphing over former state treasurer Andrew Constance by a margin of 251-206 for the seat left vacant by Foreign Minister Marise Payne.

Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton praised Sharma's election, highlighting its timing amidst global and domestic challenges, including events in the Middle East. Dutton commended Sharma's expertise in diplomatic and foreign policy matters, foreseeing his contribution to public policy debates in regions like Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific.

Amidst a tightly contested race involving 10 candidates, Dave emerged as a consensus candidate, endorsed by Dutton, who had also supported Constance and former minister Zed Seselja.

With a background as a federal member of parliament for Wentworth and serving as Australia’s Ambassador to Israel, Sharma brings extensive experience in international affairs. Dutton praised Sharma's expected role in addressing issues like rising anti-Semitism and holding senators accountable for their stances.

Sharma's diverse background includes diplomatic postings in Washington D.C. and Port Moresby, peacekeeping service in Bougainville, and leadership roles within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. His academic credentials boast degrees from the University of Cambridge and Deakin University, reflecting a robust foundation in law and international relations.
