The outgoing Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, emphasized the deepening and maturation of the relationship between the world's two largest democracies during a farewell ceremony at the India House. With over 35 years in foreign service, Sandhu commended the intensification of ties between India and the United States across various spheres, including technology, trade, defense, space, healthcare, education, skill development, and people-to-people connections.
During his tenure, Sandhu served in the US on three occasions, concluding as India’s Ambassador for four years. Reflecting on the transformative decade, he highlighted the significant progress made since the nuclear test in 1998, acknowledging the instrumental role of the US Congress in laying the foundation for the Indo-US relationship during challenging times.
Throughout his term as Ambassador, Sandhu engaged with over 300 Congressmen and around 75 Senators, fostering positive interactions that reinforced the enduring nature of the US-India partnership. Senator Mark Warner and John Podesta lauded Sandhu's contributions to bilateral ties, with Warner expressing hope for his continued public service.
Senator Jon Ossoff and Senator Amy Klobuchar acknowledged Sandhu's role in resolving agricultural disputes and tariff issues, affirming the robust and progressive nature of the relationship. Nisha Desai Biswal, Deputy CEO of the US International Development Finance Corporation, highlighted Sandhu's commitment to fostering people-to-people connections and the significance of the diaspora community in enhancing bilateral ties.
At the farewell ceremony, Sandhu was presented with an award by the Buddha Dal Sikh Organisation in recognition of his contributions, particularly to the Sikh community. Sukhpal Singh Dhanoa, a Sikh community leader, explained that the award was decided upon during the 200th birth anniversary of Baba Pholla Singh.
As Sandhu bids adieu, a successor to his role as the Indian Ambassador to the US is yet to be announced.
