India Reaffirms Support for Myanmar's Democratic Transition at UN

"As an immediate neighbour and friend of the people of Myanmar, India has been repeatedly calling for an immediate cessation of violence by all sides, release of political detainees, humanitarian assistance and the resolution of the crisis through constructive dialogue," Kshitij Tyagi, First Secretary at India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, said.

The Indian diplomat, in an interactive dialogue during a session on the human rights situation in Myanmar at the 56th regular session of the Human Rights Council, noted the continued deep concern over the situation and stressed it must be a Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned peaceful solution.

"Increased influx of people from Myanmar into our North-Eastern states and the challenge of transnational crimes such as drug and human trafficking continue to remain an area of grave concern," added Tyagi.

He congratulated Myanmar for finding peace, stability, and development in Myanmar and drew attention to the whole gamut of efforts by India in the democratization process traceable to its humanitarian assistance, community-centered projects, and capacity-building in democratic systems and practices. In particular, he mentioned activities on constitutionalism and federalism within Myanmar.

"We have all along accorded very high priority to the process of peace, stability, and development of Myanmar and have been making relentless efforts toward such ends in the form of humanitarian assistance, people-centric projects, and building capacities in democratic systems and practices, including areas of constitutionalism and federalism in Myanmar," he added.

The statement of India has also reaffirmed New Delhi's close coordination on issues relating to democratic transition in Myanmar with ASEAN.
