India is very high tariff nation, Says US President Donald Trump

"The big change occurs on April 2 when reciprocal tariffs come into play. If India, China, or any other nation—particularly India, which is a high-tariff country—keeps charging exorbitant duties, we will do the same," Trump said.

US President Donald Trump has again faulted India for its high tariffs, reiterating that retaliatory tariffs on nations putting a levy on American products will take effect from April 2.

"The big change occurs on April 2 when reciprocal tariffs come into play. If India, China, or any other nation—particularly India, which is a high-tariff country—keeps charging exorbitant duties, we will do the same," Trump said.

He also went on to indicate that Canada charges steep tariffs for American goods as well. "You know who has high tariffs? Canada. They charge us 250% on our milk products and other stuff," he said Thursday while signing executive orders in the Oval Office.

Trump explained that, at the moment, the tariffs being put in place are "temporary" and "small." Nevertheless, he emphasized that the forthcoming reciprocal tariffs, to be imposed starting April 2, will represent a dramatic change.

We've been taken advantage of by nearly every nation for decades. Many countries tax us 150% to 200%, and we tax them very little or nothing at all. That's going to change. Whatever they tax us, we will tax them the same, no exceptions," Trump stated.

Saying how he was looking forward to it, he went on, "April 2 has been on my radar for a long time. This is going to be a massive change, a game-changer for our country."
