IDF Says Senior Iranian Military Leaders Killed in Large-Scale Airstrikes

This disclosure represents a dramatic escalation in the current struggle for control by the two regional adversaries and has fueled global fears of an even wider conflict breaking out in the region.

In a swift escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) revealed on Friday that it had efficiently eliminated three of Iran's most important military leaders in an overnight wave of airstrikes against major Iranian cities.

In a tweet posted on X (formerly Twitter), the IDF declared: "We can now confirm that the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Commander of the Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and the Commander of Iran's Emergency Command were all killed in the Israeli attacks throughout Iran by over 200 fighter jets. They are three brutal mass murderers with global blood on their hands. The world is a better place without them."

This disclosure represents a dramatic escalation in the current struggle for control by the two regional adversaries and has fueled global fears of an even wider conflict breaking out in the region.

Though Iran's government has not yet formally accepted the deaths of all three generals, Iranian state media on Friday confirmed that IRGC Commander Hossein Salami was killed in an Israeli missile strike. Iran's official state broadcaster IRIB also reported loud explosions echoing across Tehran and other major cities early in the morning.

Labelled a "targeted military operation" by the Israeli government, the raids were first made public by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a televised address to the nation. "The operation will last as long as necessary in order to accomplish the mission of repelling the danger of destruction against us," Netanyahu said, highlighting the objective of the mission to "roll back the Iranian threat to Israel's very survival."

Defense Minister Israel Katz called the attack a "preemptive strike" and at the same time declared a special nationwide state of emergency in order to increase Israel's security readiness against possible retaliatory attacks.

Tensions have been building in recent months over Iran's progressing nuclear program, which Israel sees as a threat to its existence. The tensions boiled over earlier this week when Iran's Supreme National Security Council warned that any military attack on Iranian soil would be met with retribution. Tehran also asserted it had pinpointed Israel's nuclear sites through recent intelligence efforts and suggested those locations would be attacked in any counterattack.

The Israeli action is a turning point of great magnitude in the already volatile security situation in the region, with the international community now monitoring closely the reaction of Iran to this unprecedented attack on its military leadership.
