US President Donald Trump on Wednesday vociferously condemned Chinese President Xi Jinping for inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to an over-the-top military parade in Beijing.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump blamed the three leaders of "conspiring against the United States" and asked whether China would respect the American troops who "gave their blood" to assist in freeing the nation in World War II.
The parade was organized to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the defeat of World War II.
Mixing criticism and a dash of sarcasm, Trump asked if Xi would ever recognize the contributions of the United States towards liberating China from Japanese occupation during the war.
“The big question to be answered is whether or not President Xi of China will mention the massive amount of support and ‘blood’ that The United States of America gave to China in order to help it to secure its FREEDOM from a very unfriendly foreign invader,” Trump wrote.
“Many Americans died in China’s quest for Victory and Glory. I hope that they are rightfully Honored and Remembered for their Bravery and Sacrifice! May President Xi and the wonderful people of China have a great and lasting day of celebration,” he added.
In a striking closing line, Trump quipped: “Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against The United States of America.”
The remarks were made after Beijing held a grand military parade that was attended by some of its closest friends, including Putin and Kim.
Video footage of the event captured Kim welcoming Xi in a rare outing outside North Korea. Xi was also warmly greeted by Putin, after their recent encounter at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin.
The parade commemorates eight decades since the conclusion of World War II, a conflict in which China endured massive casualties while resisting imperial Japan.
During the 1930s and 1940s, the US and China were allies in the war, though ties later deteriorated during the Cold War and more recently over disputes involving trade, technology, and global influence.
