California Governor Gavin Newsom will unveil a national ad to publicly decry U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policy, which Newsom asserts threatens the United States' position as the world's top economy.
As Politico reported on Friday, the 30-second advertisement will run on "Fox and Friends" this weekend and will seek to place Newsom both as a booster of California's robust economy and as a fierce critic of Trump's signature policy.
The ad is a return to Newsom's tried-and-true approach of taking on Republicans on their own ground, marking an intensification of his criticism of Trump after months of trying to dial down tensions with the White House, the report says.
Released on YouTube Thursday, the ad has Newsom addressing the camera directly, with the Port of Oakland in the background, Xinhua News Agency reports.
In the ad, Newsom touts California's ascension to the fourth-largest economy in the world, crediting efforts to lower trade barriers and serve American consumers. He warns that Trump's tariff policy jeopardizes this progress, interfering with the flow of essential goods through California's ports.
The governor threatens that Trump's tariffs may slow the delivery of goods into the state, which could translate into bare store shelves during prime shopping times such as back-to-school and Christmas seasons.
"It's school backpacks in a few months, it'll be Christmas toys, these tariffs punish families," Newsom states in the ad.
The ad was paid for out of Newsom's 2022 re-election campaign committee, but a spokesperson would not state the amount of the buy.
