Bangladesh Abolishes August 15 Holiday Commemorating Bangabandhu's Assassination

It was leaked out that the revoke of the holiday decision had been fixed during the meeting of the Advisory Council, as per a press note from the Office of the Chief Adviser. The development was formally notified in an order issued on the same day.

The caretaker government of Bangladesh announced the scrapping of the August 15 national holiday. The day has so far been observed as a national holiday in memory of the assassination of the country's founder, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the father of incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

It was leaked out that the revoke of the holiday decision had been fixed during the meeting of the Advisory Council, as per a press note from the Office of the Chief Adviser. The development was formally notified in an order issued on the same day.

The decision came a day after a meeting with various political parties that excluded the Awami League. The parties had divergent views; some wanted it to remain a public holiday, while others were totally against this.

The declaration came after a violent incident related to the museum of Bangabandhu, which was set on fire by an angry mob soon after Hasina's resignation and exit from the country. This museum was the private residence of Bangabandhu, in which he himself and his family members were killed by the military junior officers during a military coup on August 15, 1975. At that time, Sheikh Hasina had gone to visit Germany along with her two minor children and sister Sheikh Rehana.
