Antonio Guterres Calls for Adherence to UNSC Resolution Following US-Led Airstrikes on Houthis

Guterres reiterated the Security Council's demand, as per resolution 2722, for the immediate cessation of all attacks by the Houthis.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a call for adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 2722 in the wake of US-led airstrikes on the Houthi group. Expressing deep concern over attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea, Guterres emphasized that such actions pose a threat to global supply chains, impacting the world's economic and humanitarian conditions.

Guterres reiterated the Security Council's demand, as per resolution 2722, for the immediate cessation of all attacks by the Houthis. He underscored the critical need for full compliance with the resolution, urging member states to align their defensive actions with international law.

In addition, the UN chief urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritize peace and stability in the Red Sea and the broader region. Emphasizing the importance of avoiding actions that could escalate the situation in Yemen further, Guterres appealed for ongoing efforts toward peace, emphasizing that the progress made in ending the conflict in Yemen should not be jeopardized.

The Security Council had recently adopted resolution 2722, condemning Houthi militia attacks on merchant and commercial vessels in the Red Sea. The resolution strongly condemns Houthi attacks dating back to November 19, 2023, including the seizure of the Galaxy Leader and its crew.

In response to these events, the US and the UK initiated airstrikes on Houthi military sites in the vicinity of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, in the early hours of Friday. The situation remains tense, and Guterres' plea reflects the international community's concern for de-escalation and a renewed focus on peaceful resolutions in the region.
