Danish forward Martin Braithwaite has finalized his transfer to the Brazilian outfit Gremio after confirmation that he ended the deal with Espanyol early this month.
The 33-year-old enjoyed a fine campaign, topping LaLiga Hypermotion—the second tier league of Spain—with 22 goals. His contribution was immense in securing promotion for the top division.
"Gremio announced on Monday that an agreement has been reached to sign Danish striker Martin Braithwaite, 33, who last season in Europe played for EspanyolESP. The player shall go through medical examinations and then sign his contract with the Tricolor. For the first time ever, a Danish player will wear the Grêmio shirt," said the club in an official statement.
The move from Spain to Brazil signals another chapter in the journey of Braithwaite. He has turned out in Denmark for Esbjerg, Toulouse and Bordeaux of France, England's Middlesbrough, before the famous stint in Spain with Leganés, FC Barcelona, and Espanyol. Others he has won include the Danish Cup, Spanish Cup, and Spanish league championship.
Perhaps the most noted one was Martin Braithwaite's transfer to FC Barcelona. Although Barcelona did not sign him at all in the summer transfer window since they appeared quite satisfied with their attacking lineup, after Ousmane Dembélé sustained a very bad injury, they activated a special rule in La Liga that allows clubs to sign players as injury cover. He played for two seasons as a player for Barcelona and then made a move to Espanyol in 2022.
In Spain, Braithwaite made 118 appearances and scored 25 goals with 13 assists.
