Following the inauguration of the world's tallest railway arch bridge—the Chenab Bridge in Jammu & Kashmir—Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought to light one of India's most remarkable engineering achievements.
Among them who have been credited for the tremendous project is Dr. G Madhavi Latha of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, whose contribution to the bridge's planning and design triggered extensive appreciation on social media.
As social media platforms buzzed with praise for the civil engineering expert, calling her “the woman behind the mission,” Dr. Latha has now responded publicly, offering a humble perspective that has resonated with many. In a candid post on LinkedIn, she downplayed the solo spotlight and redirected it toward the collective effort behind the construction.
"Hearty Congratulations to India on the opening of Chenab Railway bridge by our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji. It is a Civil Engineering wonder. All accolades of the planning, designing and construction are due to Indian Railways and AFCONS," she posted.
She continued to highlight that the success of the project was the fruit of myriad efforts:
“There are millions of unsung heroes to whom I salute today.” Dr. Latha briefly noted her involvement in the project but clarified that media headlines exaggerating her role were inaccurate.
“All other media statements like ‘woman behind the mission’, ‘made impossible possible’ and ‘done miracles to build the bridge’ are baseless,” she added.
Despite the wave of admiration she received from the public, the engineer emphasized that the recognition should not stop at their names alone, but all those who worked on the bridge should also be acknowledged:
"I am extremely happy about this. Thanks to all Indians who have poured congratulatory messages to me. Please remember that I am one of the thousands who deserve appreciation for Chenab Bridge. Please don't make me unnecessarily famous."
She concluded saying:
" All glory belongs to Indian Railways."
The humility shown by Dr. Latha touched many online. One commenter wrote:
“Congratulations, ma'am. And salute to your big heart… Congratulations to the entire team behind this marvel construction.”
Another said, “Most appropriate response.” Others highlighted the grace in her words:
“Heartfelt congratulations! Your humility and contribution to such a historic engineering feat are truly inspiring. Salute to all the minds and hands behind the Chenab Bridge!”
Someone else added, “It needs a really big heart to share the limelight and to share the credit with the entire team. Very few in today's world have this mindset. A big congratulations to the entire team and the cumulative effort.”
Spanning the Chenab River, the bridge stands as a significant achievement in Indian rail infrastructure, physically and symbolically linking Kashmir to the rest of the nation.
