Conor Gallagher is on the verge of a move to Atlético Madrid from Chelsea after an agreement had been made between the two clubs for a transfer worth €33 million.
The deal was accepted by Chelsea last week, but Gallagher took a little more time to deliberate on available options. He has since told Atlético Madrid officials that he wants the move to Spain and now intends to travel to Madrid next week for a medical and to sign his contract. The transfer will bring an end to his 18-year association with Chelsea, the BBC understands.
Chelsea had tabled a two-year deal with the option to extend, but Gallagher was reportedly less than impressed with the length of the deal and the diminished game time he would have under new manager Enzo Maresca.
One major reason behind his exit is that he does not fit well in Maresca's possession style, which has not really accorded him relevance in his scheme.
The decision to sell him to Atlético rather than to any Premier League club was clearly a move that showed Chelsea avoiding the strengthening of domestic rivals. Chelsea has decided to sell Gallagher to Atlético for a lower price with his current contract having less than a year left on it.
