Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are preparing for the start of a new season, with Barcelona earning a 2-1 win over Madrid in a friendly game played on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. The match delayed more than an hour because of a thunderstorm.
The first real threat Barcelona brought about was from the head of Pau Victor, on a corner, brilliantly saved by Courtois just eight minutes into the match, before play was then delayed due to the weather. After resumption, Real Madrid challenged Barcelona with more vigor. A moment of pure brilliance by Arda Guler in the 24th minute came very near to a goal but was scrubbed due to offside. Shortly after, Brahim struck a shot from range that was saved by the goalkeeper.
Madrid continued to push, and had the powerful Endrick not shot inches wide in the 38th minute, they likely would have taken the lead. Madrid continued to push, but was stunned in the 42nd minute when Lewandowski's shot was deflected and headed into the net by Pau Victor.
The second half was not different, and in the 51st minute, from Pau Victor, with a left-footed shot, Courtois made an excellent save. On the 54th minute, the lead extended to 2-0 for Barça after another close finish from Victor.
The next opportunity fell to Vini Jr. in the 63rd minute, who could have reduced the gap. But Ter Stegen did enough to avoid danger after Endrick flicked from a Modric corner. A minute into the 82nd minute, Nico Paz managed to get one for the whites, again a little too late to effect a comeback.
