While the Uttarakhand government has called off the Kanwar yatra, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to go ahead with the same but with Covid safety protocols.

Governor Baby Rani Maurya administered the oath to him and 11 others ministers at a function in Raj Bhavan in Dehradun. The new ministers are Satpal Maharaj, Harak Singh Rawat, Bansidhar Bhagat, Yashpal Arya, Bishan Singh Chupal, Subodh Uniyal, Arvind Pandey, Ganesh Joshi, Dhan Singh Rawat, Rekha Arya, and Yatishwaranand. All were also part of the previous Tirath Singh Rawat government.

It is learnt that Dhami is considered close to former chief minister Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and union defence minister Rajnath Singh in national politics. A source in Uttarakhand BJP said that Dhami has close association with Koshiyari and served as officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the former chief minister. "He has a close relationship with the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also," he said.

Dhami, a two time MLA, was elected new chief minister of the hilly state in a meeting of the BJP's legislative party in Dehradun. The election was held in the presence of central observers -- Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and party national general secretary D. Purandeswari. BJP in-charge for Uttarakhand Dushyant Gautam also present in the meeting.

Sources said that Rawat, who was in Delhi where he had met BJP chief J.P. Nadda twice in three days, on Friday left for Dehra Dun and will submit his resignation to the Governor. A BJP insider said that due to the constitutional crisis, the party has decided to replace Rawat with a sitting MLA and a legislature party meeting will be held soon for the election of the next Chief Minister after he submits his resignation to the Governor.

Addressing an event, Rawat said: "The government gave five kg of ration per person to every household, which means a family of two-member gets 10 kilograms of ration, while those with 20 received a quintal (100 kilograms) of ration. But then they get jealous of each other that one got only 10 kilograms for two and another family got a quintal for 20 members. When there was a time you only gave birth to two. Why not 20?"

It was the third comment in a week for which Rawat has been trolled. Earlier, Rawat was trolled for his comment on ripped jeans and equating Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Lord Ram. "Who knows what would have happened to India had anyone else been the Prime Minister instead of Narendra Modi during this time. We would have been in a bad state. But the Prime Minister has given us relief," Rawat said.
