On 8 May, the Government of West Bengal banned the movie allegedly to prevent any incident related to communal hatred and violence. The film was also stopped from screening in Tamil Nadu by the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association as "a precautionary measure."

A few months ago, there was an IT inspection at the offices of the big names in the industry and by now most of the top-notch stars have their own production houses. Three or four others who have turned into big producers are now facing the heat from the Enforcement Directorate officials. Incidentally, this is happening at a time when the film industry is going through a lean patch as only a handful of films released in the present calendar year were able to bring in revenue to the producers.

Hombale Films which produced 'Kantara' had announced the production of the sequel during the celebration of 100 days of the film. The script work was taken up in the month of March. The young actor has undergone a drastic transformation for his role in the film, showcasing his dedication to his craft. Currently, the team is in Budapest, Hungary for the final rehearsals of the shoot schedule. Varun has been practicing the action stunts for several days, proving why he is one of the most promising actors in the Telugu film industry.

A bench comprising Justices K.M. Joseph and B.V. Nagarathna observed that the censor board has already cleared the movie and the petitioners should rather challenge the film's certification before an appropriate authority. This bench is currently hearing matters in connection with hate speeches. The bench said that the exhibition of films entails a different process, therefore the plea seeking a stay on the release of the movie cannot be clubbed with the hate speech matters.

The film, which released on April 28, has so far minted Rs 150 crore at the global box office. Film trade analyst Ramesh Bala shared the update on the film's collection in a tweet. He tweeted: "Ponniyin Selvan 2 has crossed Rs 150 crore gross at the worldwide box office in 3 days (sic)".
