The right-arm pace bowler, who is suffering from an abdominal strain and is a doubtful starter, is required not just because he is the only pacer left from the battery that won India the Test series last time in Australia in 2018-19. He is also needed because he is the only one who can more easily adjust to the length needed on the Gabba wicket.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the stadium security officials were involved in a long discussion with Bumrah, Siraj and members of the Indian team management after the end of the third day's play at the SCG.

Bumrah's attempt to extract angles from the round the wicket, like he did in the Melbourne Test and having to bowl more overs in case other junior bowlers don't do well, could push his body that endured a lower-back injury only last year. Bumrah's returns in the series have been good so far. With Australia still 60 runs behind, it turned out to be a big wicket for India as they ran through the brittle Aussie middle-order with tight bowling and restricted them to 200 and eventually won the Test by eight wickets.

Bumrah, 27, hit six fours and two sixes as he shared a 71-run partnership with Mohammed Siraj for the 10th wicket to take India to 194 after they had been reduced to 123 for nine wickets in the 36th over. Both Bumrah and Siraj stayed together for over 13 overs as the Indian innings folded in the 49th over.
