India to begin Hockey Pro League campaign vs New Zealand

Men's hockey captain Manpreet Singh said his teammates are excited at the prospect of taking on New Zealand and Australia in away games as they launch their FIH Hockey Pro League 2021-22 campaign in February. The FIH announced the schedule for the 2021-22 season on Friday. This year's edition of the home-and-away League will start on 6 October when reigning women's world champions, the Netherlands, face Belgium.

India defeated Argentina in both FIH Pro League games, besides winning two practice games in Buenos Aires. Sharma said that the tour of Argentina was an enriching experience, and the team is hoping to carry this current run of form into the Tokyo Olympics.

"No doubt winning against a really strong team like Argentina in their home ground is a big confidence booster, but we shouldn't read too much into the results. We need to keep our heads down and remain focused on the areas that require improvement basis our performance here. Our task is not over until we stand on the podium in Tokyo," said Manpreet.

Varun Kumar (7th minute), Rajkumar Pal (13th) and Rupinder Pal Singh (14th) struck in the first quarter to rattle the hosts, but Argentina, after their 3-4 defeat in the opening match on Tuesday, came back strongly to score through Leandro Tolani (10th), Lucas Toscani (23rd), Ignacio Ortiz (42nd) and Lucas (57th) to snatch a draw.

In Friday's match, early pressure created by Argentina's forward line helped push India on the backfoot in the very first quarter. A foot-foul by an Indian defender in the striking circle gave away a penalty corner to the home team which was well-capitalized by the experienced squad. Silvina D'elia scored the goal, in a tactically executed penalty corner, fetching her team a 1-0 lead in the second minute of play.

Though Argentina put India on the backfoot early in the match, earning a penalty corner in the sixth minute, India goalkeeper Savita made a splendid save to ward off early danger. Argentina continued to push for opportunities all through the second quarter too, creating penalty corners in the 21st and 23rd minutes but India's penalty corner defence held the fort.

On Saturday evening, it was a very open contest between the two teams during the first three quarters, with neither team managing to break the deadlock. There were chances for both the teams through open play and set pieces, but the defenses stood up tall to deny their opponents.
