Savita to lead women's team in Asia Cup hockey

The 18-member Indian team for the tournament, to be played at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, looks formidable with 16 players from the side that was part of the historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020. Defending champions India will battle it out against China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand for the title. The top-four teams from this tournament will qualify for the 2022 FIH Women's Hockey World Cup to be held in Spain and the Netherlands.

Tournament top scorer Sharda Nand Tiwari opened the scoring for Uttar Pradesh Hockey in the 15th minute with a trademark penalty corner before Arun Sahani (16', 34') stretched Uttar Pradesh Hockey's lead further with a brace. Raman pulled one goal back for Hockey Chandigarh in the 51st minute, but Uttar Pradesh held on to the lead to be crowned champions of the tournament.
After high of 2021, hockey teams gear up for make-or-break year

2022 will be a busy year for the Indian hockey teams as they now have to prove that success at the Tokyo Olympics in July-August 2021 was not a flash in the pan and that they can successfully replicate the results in the upcoming events. In that sense, 2022 will be very crucial -- and hectic too -- because the teams will have to work on a triple-peak system, as the schedule includes the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham (July 28-August 8), followed by the Asian Games at Hangzhou from September 10-25.

India are ranked third in men's rankings and ninth in women's section in the year-end rankings revealed on Thursday. Besides the Tokyo Olympics, where they won an Olympic medal after a gap of four decades, the Indian men's hockey team also bagged a bronze medal in the 2021 Asian Champions Trophy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Wednesday.

Highlighting the importance of not getting complacent with any opponent, Manpreet stated that the team will play with high tempo in the semifinal final against Japan. "This is our first competition after the Olympic success and we never came into the tournament thinking the matches will be easy for us.
