With the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham just around the corner, some former and current players of the Indian women's hockey team went down memory lane to share their most cherished moments from the past editions of the prestigious tournament.
FIH to hold Pro League in five time-blocks from 2023-24 season

The FIH has changed the format of the Pro League so as not to disrupt the schedule of the domestic club competitions, tournaments, and leagues. "This change has been confirmed for the subsequent three editions at least. Amongst others, this will help significantly for the planning of club competitions," the FIH informed in a press release on Saturday.

The team faces a Herculean task as India have never won gold in Commonwealth Games men's hockey since the sport made its debut in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur. Indian men had finished fourth in Gold Coast in 2018. India are in Pool B with England, Canada, Wales and Ghana. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Scotland comprise the tougher Pool A in the 10-team competition.

The Indian team began their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against England. In their next match, they were held to a 1-1 draw by their Asian opponents, China. India's final group stage match ended in a 3-4 defeat to New Zealand.

Navneet Kaur (30', 45') starred for India, scoring two golas, while Deep Grace Ekka (38') also scored a crucial goal in the match. For Japan, Yu Asai (20') scored the sole goal for her team. India started the match on front foot as Neha passed the ball inside the circle towards Navneet Kaur to set up an early chance. A few minutes later Gurjit Kaur tried to give India the lead from a Penalty Corner. But Japan's Moeka Tsubouchi defended well to clear away the ball.

After the two teams ended the regulation time at 1-1, the Indian team defeated Canada 3-2 in the sudden death to progress to the 9-12th placings of the tournament. India is already out of medal contention after they lost the crossover match against Spain for a place in the quarterfinal by a solitary goal. Madeline Secco (11th minute) scored for Canada, while Salima Tete (58th) scored the equalizer for India in the regulation time.

It was Marta Segu (57th minute) who scored the lone goal of the match. With a place in the last-eight at stake, both teams got off to a nervy start. It took them a while to settle down and build on a good structure. It was not until a little over eight minutes into play that India earned the first penalty corner of the match through Neha, who skilfully tackled the Spanish defender inside the circle.  India, however, could not make much of the opportunity with the hosts defending doggedly.

However, the Savita-led India team is still in contention for a spot in the quarterfinal as they finished third in their pool. India will face the side which finishes second in Pool C in the crossover match on July 10 for a place in the last-eight. Vandana Katariya (4th munite), Lalremsiami (44th) and Gurjit Kaur (59th) were the scorers for India.

A goal from Vandana Katariya in the 45th minute of the match helped the Indian team in picking up a point after Jiali Zheng had opened the scoring for China in the 26th minute. India will next face off against New Zealand in their third Pool B game on Thursday. It will be a must-win contest for the Indian Women's Hockey Team to make it to the quarterfinals. India and New Zealand will be meeting each other for the first time in five years.
