CWG 2022: Mother of twins Dipika Pallikal shines on mixed day for India in squash

All eyes at the squash court were on the seasoned mixed doubles combine of Dipika Pallikal and Saurav Ghosal after the latter bagged his first singles medal in the Commonwealth Games -- a bronze. Dipika is playing her first Commonwealth Games less than a year after giving birth to twin boys. The pair had won the mixed doubles title in the World Doubles in Glasgow where Dipika partnered Joshna Chinappa to the women's doubles title in April this year. On Thursday, Dipika and Saurav got the better of Emily Whitlock and Peter Creed of Wales, winning 2-0 (11-8, 11-4) in the rather one-sided encounter.

Drag flicker Harmanpreet Singh struck a hat-trick -- two goals off penalty corners and one off a stroke, while Gurjant Singh added a field goal as India came up with a strong performance in the Pool B match against Wales, a team against which they had found it difficult to get past. Gareth Furlong scored the lone consolation goal for Wales in the 49th minute.

Salima Tete (3'), Navneet Kaur (22') and Lalremsiami (51') found the back of the net for India, meanwhile, Brienne Stairs (23') and Hannah Haughn (39') scored for Canada. The Indian team's opponent for the semifinal will be decided after the final Pool A match between England and Wales on Thursday. However, India have confirmed a top-two finish in their Pool.

The Indian women's hockey team, which has lost to England in the Olympic Games bronze medal match also, conceded early goals and were down 0-3 before getting a lone consolation goal in fourth quarter. Giselle Ansley (3'), Tess Howard (40'), Hannah Martin (53') found the back of the net for England, while, Vandana Katariya (60') was the only scorer for India.

India took a solid 4-1 lead in the match with Mandeep Singh (13', 22') scoring a brace and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay (3') and Harmanpreet Singh (46') contributing a goal each. But with Nicholas Bandurak (47', 53') scoring a brace, and Liam Ansell (42') and Phillip Roper (50') scored a goal each.
India hockey captain Savita cautions team against England's home advantage

After a strong showing against Ghana (5-0), India swatted aside the challenge from Wales 3-1 and will be looking forward to their tough encounter against the hosts. The English women too were equally menacing against Ghana winning the opener 12-0, before defeating Canada 1-0 in the second game. The hosts will go into the match against India as Pool A leaders, as they have a better goal difference.

Drag flicker Harmanpreet Singh struck three goals (10', 25' and 53'), Jugraj Singh struck a brace (22' and 43') while Abhishek (2'), Shamsher Singh (14'), Akashdeep Singh (20'), Nilakanta Sharma (38'), Varun Kumar (39') and Mandeep Singh (48') scored a goal apiece as India romped to a big win in their Pool B encounter. India scored three goals in the first quarter and two in the second as they raced to a 5-0 lead at half-time. They added four goals in a productive third quarter before sealing the win with two more goals in the fourth and final quarter.

Vandana Katariya (26th, 48th) starred with a brace, while Gurjit Kaur (28th) scored a goal for India. Xenna Hughes (45th) got on the score-sheet for Wales. Riding high on confidence, India started aggressively, earning a penalty corner in the first minute of the match on Saturday evening.
CWG 2022: Redemption time for Indian women's hockey team to recapture the gold medal

India defeated hosts England 3-2 in extra time to win the gold medal -- coming back to score the winner in the final moments of extra time. The two teams are on the path to collision in Birmingham too as they are in the same Pool A with Canada, Wales and Ghana as the other teams and will face off in their preliminary round match on August 2. Winning that match and topping the group could be crucial so as to avoid strong Australia in the semifinals.

The decision to name Singh, who led the Indian men's hockey team to a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021, as the second flagbearer for the said occasion was arrived at after the IOA was intimated by the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee that two flagbearers -- one male and one female -- must be named by each country for the opening ceremony.
