OpenAI, the company behind the AI chatbot ChatGPT, is reportedly in discussions with Reliance Industries Ltd. and major Indian data centre operators to introduce its Stargate supercomputing project in India, marking a potential boost to Mukesh Ambani’s AI initiatives.
As reported by The Economic Times, Sam Altman-led OpenAI is in early discussions with Sify Technologies Ltd. and Yotta Data Services as part of its strategy to take the $500-billion supercomputing initiative to India. At the same time, the firm has been discussing terms with Reliance Industries for six months, looking into issues ranging from data centre capacity to available power.
The action is in tune with India's initiative for local data storage. Government sources have been quoted as having urged OpenAI to localize data of Indian users and to invest part of its $500-billion undertaking in India. "The government has informed OpenAI that they must invest at least some few of the $500-billion project in India," said an unidentified official to ET.
