OpenAI's Debut in India: Aiming to Utilize AI for Societal Advancement in 'Bharat

Misra is the first employee of OpenAI in India. She had previously employed by Meta-owned WhatsApp and the caller identification service Truecaller.

OpenAI, a ChatGPT developer led by Sam Altman, is excited to work with developers, users, and policymakers to further India's artificial intelligence (AI) agenda. The company's national head for partnerships and public policy, Pragya Misra, stated on Wednesday.

Misra is the first employee of OpenAI in India. She had previously employed by Meta-owned WhatsApp and the caller identification service Truecaller.

On the social media channel, she announced her new role with excitement while saying that she would lead Public Policy and Partnerships at OpenAI in India. She mentioned that the organization was committed to values like safety, transparency, and a human-centric approach in AI.

Misra mentioned that the company wanted to work collaboratively with a very broad range of stakeholders, including developers, users, academics, civil society, and policymakers, to leverage the potential of AI for societal benefit in the Indian context.

She mentioned that in her earlier role as the Director of Public Affairs at Truecaller, she had been working closely with ministries, investors, and key stakeholders and media partners. She had earlier worked with Facebook—now Meta—and WhatsApp.

The government sanctioned a whopping budget of Rs 10,371.92 crore for the AI mission in March. The initiative is set up to achieve a strong ecosystem of AI innovation and will undertake strategic initiatives and partnerships across the public and private sectors.
