In the coming year, Instagram predicts that the Gen Z population in India will play a pivotal role in shaping key trends on the platform. The trends span various domains, with an emphasis on career priorities, a keen interest in memes, and a diverse exploration of food flavors, according to insights shared in the '2024 Instagram Trend Talk' by the Meta-owned company.

The report highlights the distinctive qualities of Indian Gen Z, particularly their vibrant and entrepreneurial spirit as they enthusiastically delve into new interests and trends across different areas. Paras Sharma, Director of Content and Community Partnerships at Meta India, noted, “Indian Gen Z's upbeat and entrepreneurial spirit stands out as they eagerly explore new interests and trends across different domains. Their dedication to chosen fandoms and commitment to self-improvement shine through distinctly in these insights.”

While sharing similarities with their global peers in many aspects, the trends also reveal specific areas where Indian Gen Z differs and showcases uniqueness. The insights indicate that Gen Z in India is particularly interested in diverse food and ingredients, ranging from ayurvedic elements to vegan products, plant-based meats, and adaptogens.

Looking ahead to 2024, the top priorities for Gen Z in India include staying healthy, exploring career paths, and traveling. Notably, their focus on career pursuits is stronger compared to other nations. Approximately 43% expressed the hope that 2024 would be their self-improvement era, investing in personal growth and development. The findings also highlight that, unlike their global counterparts, Gen Z in India believes starting their own business is the best path to wealth, with 44% showing interest in DIY (do-it-yourself) and unconventional clothing styles.

In the realm of beauty trends, a quarter of Gen Z in India expressed a preference for trying new hairstyles. Moreover, virtually every Gen Z individual in India aligns with a specific fandom, whether it be music, gaming, or sports. Notably, India boasts the highest percentage of sports superfans among Gen Z in comparison to other countries, with affiliations ranging from music icons like BTS and AR Rahman to gaming favorites like Minecraft and sports teams such as the Indian Cricket Team and Barcelona.
