Google's highly anticipated conversational AI, Gemini, aimed at rivaling OpenAI, has faced a setback, leading to a delayed launch until January next year, as per media reports.
The Information, citing sources, revealed that CEO Sundar Pichai made the decision to cancel a series of Gemini events scheduled for the upcoming week in California, New York, and Washington. The reason behind this postponement was Google's discovery that the AI encountered difficulties in reliably handling non-English queries.
The abandoned events, kept confidential until now, were pivotal as they would have signified Google's most significant product launch of the year. Google had dedicated considerable computing resources and merged substantial teams to expedite the development to compete with OpenAI urgently.
Gemini, a versatile AI, is engineered to manage diverse applications by amalgamating various data types such as images and text, facilitating more sophisticated tasks.
In an earlier statement in June, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis expressed confidence that Gemini would surpass OpenAI's ChatGPT in capabilities. Hassabis highlighted the utilization of techniques akin to AlphaGo, an AI program renowned for defeating a human champion in the board game Go, in the development of Gemini. The anticipated improvements from Gemini are expected to enhance Google's existing AI and AI-driven products like Bard, Google Assistant, and Search.
The genesis of this new AI system was hinted at during Google's developer conference in May when the company unveiled its ambitious AI projects, signaling a significant advancement in Google's AI capabilities.
