Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, weighed in Sunday to defend the founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, and blasted Mark Zuckerberg over his failure to clamp down on the exploitation of children using Instagram. Musk shared in reaction to Durov's latest arrest by France authorities over five counts regarding his messaging app, for which he could face up to a 20-year prison sentence if convicted.
He said that Zuckerberg, the founder of Meta, should be liable for the "massive child exploitation" problem on Instagram rather than being granted immunity. He went on to say that Zuckerberg had given in to the pressure to censor and accused Meta of censuring free speech while supposedly giving governments backchannel access to user data.
He further commented that things in Europe might go bad, suggesting people could face really serious trouble for engagement alone. He added that sharing the posts of X (formerly Twitter) is of key importance in support of free speech, particularly in countries where huge censorship is involved.
Back in the Senate hearing this year, Zuckerberg apologized to the families of the victims for all their suffering from online child exploitation. He said that his firm puts great effort into detecting these abuses to avoid more losses in the future.
Furthermore, Musk accused Meta of having "super greedy" attribution policies, compared to his company, which is "terrible at claiming credit."
The debacle between Musk and Zuckerberg, who, at one time, agreed to a "cage fight," has been a point of contention. The highly anticipated event never happened.
