Over the past few years, top Android players like Samsung, Google, Motorola, and OnePlus have launched their foldables, while others like Huawei and Oppo have innovated further with ultra-thin or triple-screen foldables. Apple, on the other hand, has been slow to join the foldable fray, rather focusing on a sophisticated and premium line of thought before taking the plunge with one of its own devices.
In accordance with popular Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company is poised to complete the design and specs of its inaugural foldable iPhone in the second quarter of 2025. That said, full-scale manufacturing won't kick into gear before the fourth quarter of 2026. Kuo has further mentioned that the early release will be limited in volume, with Apple planning to deliver around 5 million devices during the first year.
The smartphone is said to pack a 7.8-inch inner foldable screen and 5.5-inch external cover screen, with plenty of screen real estate on both the folded and unfolded devices. It should be built with a book-like design format similar to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold devices, putting it in the line of premium smartphones.
Furthermore, Kuo has confirmed that Apple's foldable iPhone will abandon Face ID for a Touch ID fingerprint sensor integrated into the side button to maximize interior space. Similar to newer iPhones, it is expected to be pitched as a 'true AI-powered device,' taking advantage of its more expansive screen for improved AI-based multitasking. In terms of price, Kuo estimates the gadget may cost more than $2,000, possibly going all the way up to $2,500.
