Wanindu Hasaranga Resigns as Sri Lanka T20I Captain Before Upcoming Series Against India

In an SLC statement, Hasaranga explained that stepping down was in the best interest of the team while he intended to continue contributing as a player. "Sri Lanka will always receive my fullest effort as a player, and I will support my teammates and leadership as I always have," he wrote in his resignation letter.

Sources close to the team said that with the white-ball series against India scheduled later this month, Wanindu Hasaranga has stepped down as captain of the T20Is. He was appointed last year and led 10 matches but became a witness of disappointment in his final stint when Sri Lanka got eliminated in the group stage of the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup.

SLC has taken his decision in stride and also reiterated that Hasaranga is going to be an integral part of their international plans. Sri Lanka's immediate task is the home series against India, comprising three T20Is and three ODIs, from July 26. It's not clear yet who will lead the team in the T20Is, although the legendary Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as the interim head coach.
