Indian cricket great Virat Kohli officially declared his retirement from Test cricket on Monday, ending speculation about his future in the format of the game that has lasted for years.

At 36, Kohli brings an incredible Test career to a close, having played for India in 123 games, scoring 9,230 runs, with 30 centuries, at a remarkable average of 46.85. With this move, Kohli will now concentrate exclusively on One Day Internationals, having already bid adieu to T20 Internationals a year ago.

"As I walk away from this format, it's not simple — but it feels appropriate. I've left everything on the court, and it's given me back a lot more than I could've ever imagined," Kohli spoke of in a passionate Instagram post.

"I'm leaving with a heart full of thanks — for the game, for the people I had the privilege to share the field with, and for each and every person who made me feel visible along the way," he went on to say.

Kohli’s decision adds to the growing list of senior Indian players retiring from Test cricket. Spin maestro Ravichandran Ashwin bowed out in December, and just last week, Rohit Sharma also announced his retirement from the format.
