Vijay Mallya Reflects on RCB's IPL Triumph, Credits Kohli's Loyalty

RCB won a nail-biting six-run win over Punjab Kings in the IPL season final played in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, ending their long-standing drought for the coveted cup in the tournament's 18th season.

Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) owner Vijay Mallya nostalgically remembered picking young Virat Kohli at the first IPL auction 18 years ago and elaborated on his admiration for the star player's never-say-die spirit towards the franchise — which has now finally won its first-ever IPL championship.

"When I founded RCB, my aspiration has always been to make Bengaluru the destination for the IPL trophy. I was privileged enough to select the great King Kohli as a young man, and it's amazing to see him be so loyal to RCB for 18 years," Mallya posted on 'X'.

Mallya bought the RCB franchise in 2008 for $111.6 million and picked Kohli at the first-ever IPL auction of that year. Since then, the batting mastermind has remained a one-club man, playing for the Bengaluru team throughout his IPL career.

While Mallya lost control of the franchise in 2016 because of financial difficulties, with United Spirits taking full ownership today, his role in assembling the team's galaxy of stars is universally recognized.

He also emphasized his contribution towards signing cricketing stars such as AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Jacques Kallis, and Anil Kumble to the side, all of whom are still iconic names in RCB's history.

"I was also privileged to select Chris Gayle, the Universe Boss, and Mr. 360, AB De Villiers, both nostalgic pieces of RCB's heritage. Finally, the IPL trophy has reached Bengaluru," Mallya further said.

He extended his greetings to all those who helped to make this dream a reality, particularly the ardent RCB fans, proclaiming, "Ee Sala Cup Bengaluru Baruthe! (This year, the cup is ours)."

In spite of being accused in connection with huge loan defaults of Indian banks, including the State Bank of India (SBI), Mallya used the moment to hail the entire RCB team and management for their brilliant performance.

"RCB are finally IPL Champions after 18 years! They gave a brilliant campaign throughout the season of 2025 with a well-balanced team, aggressive gameplay, and good coaching and support staff. Congratulations many times! Ee Sala Cup Namde!!"
