PBKS Captain Shreyas Iyer Vows to Win Trophy Next Year: ‘We Have to Be Here’

This year was Punjab Kings' first appearance at an IPL final in 11 years and merely their second in franchise history, and just their third playoff appearance. For Iyer individually, it was his second straight final, having guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the championship in 2024.

Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer looked dismayed after his side's close six-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2025 final. Still, he is sure that Punjab can bounce back and win the trophy in the following year.

Iyer became the first captain to lead three teams into an IPL final—a distinction that only captains of Delhi Daredevils ever approach. He credited his team with their bold attitude during the campaign and specifically mentioned the pivotal role played by Krunal Pandya in the final.

"Disappointed, I must say, but the manner in which our boys approached the situation, it wasn't in our cards, but a lot of credit should go to the support staff, the owners, and everyone else who's involved in this. Looking at the previous game, I myself thought that 200 was a par score. They bowled exceptionally well, particularly Krunal, who has loads of experience. I feel that was the turning point.". I am so proud of every single person who has been part of this team.

"There are many youngsters who are in their first season, and they've been very courageous. We wouldn't be where we are without them. I congratulate them. We have to be here and lift the trophy next year.". The manner in which we came to every game and with a sense of belief that we can say, 'We can win this game'. Hopefully, we can be here next year and play some good cricket," Iyer said in his post-match interview.

During the course of the season, Iyer's captaincy played a vital role in instilling hope among Punjab supporters. His heroics of 87 runs led PBKS to a commanding win against five-time champions Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2. However, in the final, he was unable to carry on that way, getting dismissed for merely 1 run off 2 deliveries. Punjab totaled 184/7 in their 20 overs while chasing 191, with significant efforts by Shashank Singh (61*) and Josh Inglis (39).
