World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is through to her second US Open quarterfinal - her first since her 2022 title - after beating 16th-seed Liudmila Samsonova in the Round of 16. Swiatek won 6-4, 6-1 in her landmark 100th Grand Slam singles match to improve to 83-17 at Grand Slam level. Astoundingly, she has not yet lost a set this tournament.
Swiatek's win keeps her in contention for more honors this season, extending her WTA-leading total of 57 match wins. Her impressive year includes five titles, with her fourth Roland Garros championship and an Olympic bronze medal among them. The 2022 US Open women's singles champion, Swiatek is targeting her sixth Grand Slam title.
She is one of just three players in the top half of the draw to have reached the second week without dropping a set, and she'll meet No. 6 seed Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals. Pegula moved into the last eight for the second time in three years with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Diana Shnaider. The sixth seed has been in a good run of form, winning 13 of her last 14 matches, though the only defeat in that time came against Aryna Sabalenka in the Cincinnati Open final. Pegula has struggled during the early part of the year and is looking to reach a first major semifinal after losing at the quarterfinal stage in all seven attempts so far. Swiatek has already beaten Pegula in the US Open quarterfinals in 2022.
Other major development: Beatriz Haddad Maia advanced to her maiden US Open quarterfinal as she came from behind to defeat former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Meanwhile, Haddad Maia is the first Brazilian woman to reach the US Open women's singles quarterfinal since Maria Bueno in 1968, per tournament statistics, and also the first left-handed player from South America to make the final eight at Flushing Meadows.
